Percussion Syllabus - Year I

TABLA


Introduction
This elementary course in the Indian percussion music of tabla is taught through a four-year syllabus. The course is offered in both the theoretical and practical aspects of tabla playing, both Classical and folk genres.
This First Year Course (elementary level) provides some basic information on tabla. It orients and prepares the student for a systematic and sustained approach to Indian percussion music..

Objectives of the Course:
The objective of this course is as follows:
To introduce a comprehensive, systematic and structured course of study of the Hindustani Classical rhythmic system on a phased basis.
To introduce students to the world of music through the percussion instrument, specializing in Tabla and
To train the students both in the theoretical and practical aspects of playing Tabla and other Indian percussion instruments in the basics of percussion through annual courses of studies .

Theory:
Definitions:
Taal and its elements: Matra Laya, Theka, Sam,Khali, Taali, Vibhag and Bol

Practical:

• An introduction to rhythm or taal
• Introduction to the method of counting in the Hindustani rhythmic system, using approved ‘hand signals’
• Introduction to the finger techniques on the Tabla.
• Theka of the following taals: Teen Taal , Keherwa Taal and Dadra Taal
• Compositions in the above rhythmic systems (Taals)
• The method of executing the compositions imparted on the Tabla.

Note; Students are required to bring their instruments to the class in order to receive the practical instructions.
